Acquires Medifor: Will Offer Physician Driven Patient Education
Software Enables Physicians to 'Prescribe' A
Patient Care Plan Over the Internet
Port Townsend, WA and Chicago, IL – April 13, 2000
— Allscripts, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDRX), the
leading provider of electronic prescribing, medication management, and physician
productivity solutions, announced today the acquisition of Medifor Inc., the
leader in Internet delivered patient education. The transaction is valued at $33
million in stock.
The merger brings together Allscripts’ TouchScript® Personal Prescriber™,
the premier electronic prescribing solution at the point-of-care, and Medifor’s
PATIENT ED® system, a highly innovative software solution that improves patient
outcomes through dissemination of customized instructions, illustrations, and
personalized patient education material at the point-of-care and over the
Internet. Physicians can access over 1,000 templates for common medical
conditions. Medifor currently has more than 3,000 physician subscribers at 500
locations nationwide while TouchScript is currently being used by more than
2,000 physicians nationwide.
As this portion of a PATIENT ED page shows, personalized web pages may
contain a variety of information.
"Together, our software will
enable physicians, with just a few touches of the screen, to create a
prescription on their Personal Prescriber and to ‘prescribe’ a personalized,
secure webpage for each patient. Each webpage will contain a confidential care
plan and also include links to other medically appropriate information and
resources," commented Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts,
Inc. "The PATIENT ED system builds upon the physician-patient relationship
by leveraging precious physician time with education and communication tools and
extends their relationship with patients beyond the office walls."
Medifor's solution enhances the quality of treatment decisions, empowers the
provider as an educator, makes patients full, collaborative partners in their
own care and helps reduce physician workload through affordable,
easy-to-implement information technologies. The system also saves physicians
time because all instructions can be automatically added to the patient’s
chart. All of this functionality is provided via the Internet to allow for easy
to use, easy to access information.
"We are excited to be joining the Allscripts’ team. Our two solutions
complement each other perfectly and focus on the most valuable point in the
healthcare continuum: the physician-patient encounter in the exam room",
said J. Peter Geerlofs, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Medifor
Inc. and newly appointed Chief Medical Officer of Allscripts, Inc. "We also
share a belief that physicians are most attracted to clinical tools that can
enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes, be implemented rapidly, and save
time, benefits available today using both of our tools."

Preventing
Medical Mistakes
PATIENT ED®
system featured on ABC news affiliate KOMO 4 TV
in Seattle
Medifor's flagship
product, the PATIENT ED® system, was featured this week in a Health Watch report that aired on ABC’s Seattle affiliate KOMO
TV (Channel 4) and KOMO Radio AM 1000. The PATIENT ED® system was cited
as an example of a practical way for physicians to reduce the risk
of medical mistakes that can occur when healthcare providers and
pharmacists misread hand-written prescription orders and chart
notes. The story was filmed at Kitsap Children’s Clinic and featured
Ron Dionne, MD, who uses the system in his office.
"This software is a wonderful
vision of what will be the future of medicine."
"The provider saves time, gives
better quality care, has fewer call backs from patients who did not understand
information and has improved patient satisfaction. The patient has a better understanding of
his illness and has a better outcome. . ."
